The windows of any retail arena are the key to seducing unsuspecting patrons inside. Glamorous gowns or items featured in Vogue commonly grace the store front of any high-end boutique.
Maxfield in Los Angeles employs a different tactic—the entire building is concrete, except for a carved-out corner with two panels of glass. This is Maxfield’s only window display, and at first glance, can be a bit misleading.
The countless times I have trekked down Melrose Blvd in Los Angeles, I never noticed Maxfield. It is situated across the street from what used …

This is America, land of obesity. According to studies collected by ObesityinAmerica.org, 62% of American women and 67% of American men are overweight. It’s a dangerous trend gaining so much momentum that our growing waistlines have been called an “epidemic.” Yet while the American layman’s bodies are expanding, our Hollywood idols seem to be shrinking, and nobody seems to give it a second thought. In a time when Lindsay Lohan seemed to be shrinking with every snap of the paparazzi camera, the American media and public chose to focus our attention on Jessica Simpson’s weight gain instead. Earlier this week, unflattering pictures of Jessica Simpson surfaced and the media attacked her for putting on the pounds. While it does appear that the pop-star turned country-crooner gained a little weight, she’s clearly nowhere near being obese. In fact, she probably wouldn’t even qualify as medically unhealthy. Simply put, she is not fat.

“Dress: Zac Posen. Belt: Todd Oldham Vintage. Bag: Gucci,” begins my favorite film of ‘09. Rebecca Bloomwood (played by Isla Fisher) enters the scene and immediately commands the attention of the audience with her over-the-top outfit and bubbly personality. Isla Fisher played the part of Rebecca with such comedic ease that I didn’t want the movie to end. Rebecca Bloomwood loves to uncontrollably shop and will do anything to get a Gucci sweater at 50% off. But, alas, she is swimming in debt (who can’t relate to that) because of her overspending. There is not a single sample sale in New York that Rebecca does not got to. Even when she’s in Shopaholics Anonymous she leaves the meeting early to go to a sample sale. She has always dreamed of writing for a fashion magazine, but she has no way to get her foot in the door until she gets an interview for a savings magazine, which is so not her life. However, she excels at her job and writes a column that relates shoe shopping to investing and gains overnight celebrity status.

I’ll just be straight to you from the beginning – I LOVE Jason Schwartzman. There’s just something about his hipster looks, his cool and laid-back demeanor, his witty cadence, those puppy dog eyes that make me adore him, in that whole ‘I just want to be your friend!’ sort of way.
So I was probably more invested than most in the idea of Schwartzman as a solo musician (obviously, he was the drummer of Phantom Planet who helped to create that unforgettable anthem of “California,” but what could we really …
