THE CRITIC: Galliano Fall 2009

by Gerardo Mendez 14 June 2009 192 views One Comment E-mail Gerardo Mendez

We are barely entering summer, but I am pretty sure all fashionistas have bought more than enough clothes for the season, so I decided to review one of my favorite collections for Fall 2009, which are already up for grabs. Having said that, I have to confess two things: j’adore Dior and I love Galliano. Our favorite brit designer has worked in some of Dior’s most prolific, controversial and avant-garde collections up to date, and with his own label, John Galliano, he has crossed every single boundary he has encountered, with a true passion for design and breaking rules.

His Fall 2009 collection is simply breath taking. First, in a winter wonderland, he portrays long skirts and plenty of long and pale accessories, that march the dramatic hats and knee-length boots in grays and cream colors. He proceeds to smaller outfits, both in blue and red, with unforgettable hats, all with no defined shape, very much in the Alexander McQueen style. He presents short skirts, embroidery in high quality and short jackets used as dresses, very much in reminiscence of Russian and German influences throughout the gown, with the modern hats and transparencies to give a touch of independence and a sense of personal style proper from this designer but very much forgotten by others, who take recession times as a holiday and in stead of innovating, just copy ready-to-wear regular clothes. Galliano goes beyond and introduces the best of the collections, the full dresses in transparent grays, blacks and navies. The fabrics look exquisite, and the gowns themselves are a celebration of art itself. He seems to borrow ideas from his prior futuristic approaches to fashion and mix them with aesthetic long asymmetrical skirts, enormous medallions and the trademark boots for this season with gray puffs all in line at the front.

I will not tell you to go to the office in Galliano’s clothing (except for the boots or accessories), but I can tell you that they are perfect for any cold chilly night out in galas or even clubs. Look for the jacket/dress in black that should be a perfect combo with any boots, or the hats that will give you that special look that will make all heads turn.
