The Sartorialist- Sam Sparro

Who was out looking fly at “Out100’s” party earlier this week? Our THEPOPFIX Pick of the week, Sam Sparro!

We like to call Sam Sparro “The Sartorialist.” His avant-garde garb and flashy clothing have instantly transformed him into a street-wear fashion icon. I mean, who else could sport a navy hat with an 80’s jacket and zebra leggings without looking like a complete, utter, hot mess who escaped from the circuses of Siberia? Sam Sparro could wear ski goggles, mom jeans, and a Nebraskan straw hat for all that mattered, and somehow still make it fierce.

Why?

Because his music is what makes Sam just flat out retro and cool. His electronic-funk music added with a smidgen of pop sung by an unpretentious soulful voice,  has made the 26-year-old Aussie and American expatriate a huge star all over Europe.

A self-proclaimed and proud “Gay Christian,” Sam grew up in Australia, Los Angeles, and London, meshing together the best of all English-speaking worlds: the nonchalance of an Aussie, the laid back vibe of an Angeleno, and the sharp wit and tongue of a Brit.

“Black and Gold” was the breakout song of 2008, and Sam’s big break. Flamboyantly catchy, profoundly simple, disco not out-trumping retro, the song catupulted Sparro into an overnight, well-deserved celebrity. The song is actually about Sam’s Christian faith, and his struggles with believing in a God, questioning if He’s “really there.”

“It’s about looking for God, and the answers,” he said in an interview.

The slow rising beginning with the bass and thumps of a synthesizer make the song an instant classic.

But what we love most about Sam is that the man doesn’t take himself too seriously.Who else could sing an entire song about not being able to afford to eat because their jeans were way too expensive? Who else could carry a tune about an annoying lover who’s sticking to him like cling wrap without being uber annoying? What other singer could promote recycling in the middle of their album and inspire an eco-friendly attitude without seeming like a hipster douche?

Sam can.

And if you haven’t heard of him, well, get ready, ’cause he’s about to explode.
