Common Winter Woes And How to Fix Them

Although most Angelenos tend to put 60 degree weather and rain into the natural disaster category, there’s no need to dread the cooler months. Let’s trade our signature designer sunglasses in for rain coats and learn how to deal with Fall and Winter like the of the world. In order to help Angelenos  confront the cold THE POP FIX compiled a list of common winter complaints, from dry hair to season-induced depression, accompanied by sufficient solutions to help us survive October- February along with the best of ‘em.

THE POP FIX GUIDE TO WINTER WOES, AND HOW TO FIX THEM:

Winter woe: Dry, irritated skin

Fix: Take tepid showers, and moisturize while damp

According to WebMD, hot showers can irritate sensitive skin. In order to keep your skin sane during winter months, turn down the temp and shun steamy showers! After you towel off, be sure to slather on some lotion to trap moisture in your skin. Some of my favorites include:

Philosophy’s Amazing Grace Body Firming Emulsion: Goes on smooth, and smells amazing!

Lubriderm Sensitive Skin Therapy: Great for those who irritate easily.

Winter woe: Depression

Fix: Physical activity and more light

Darker months can produce darker emotions. Literally. According to Wikipedia, it’s known as SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder. Most people will agree that they’ve spent a Fall or Winter day lamenting the dismal weather, the fact that gorging on Halloween candy added a few pounds to your frame, or the horrific realization that you’re single for yet another holiday season. But people who suffer from SAD can have symptoms that range from mild to severe, and may require medical treatment if you land in the latter category. However, if you notice that your mood is affected by the cooler weather, MayoClinic.com says that small adjustments can lead to a major mood-overhaul. Little changes such as getting more exercise, spending some time outdoors and maximizing light in your everyday environment (whether it’s by opening the blinds or turning on more lights throughout your apartment) can add up to a better mood.

Winter woe: Brittle hair

Fix: Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner

Many popular shampoos contain drying ingredients such as detergents and/or foaming agents that can contribute to brittle hair, especially when accompanied with winter weather. According to Allure, if your hair is looking dull or dry you should consider switching to a moisturizing shampoo twice a week, like Frederic Fekkai’s Moisturizing Shampoo with Shea Butter:

A perfect compliment to a hydrating shampoo is an ultra-thick conditioner like Crede ER, which was recommended to me by Begonia at Prive Salon when my hair was stressed and over-processed. This stuff works miracles for dry hair in need of a little TLC.

Winter woe: Chapped lips

Fix: Proper lip care and avoid licking your lips.

Chapped lips can be caused by dry weather, but luckily, they can be fixed by following a few simple steps such as vigilant lip balm application. Watch this video for more tips to treat chapped lips:

Winter woe: Holiday Party Hangover

Fix: Pain killers

As much as I’d like to say there was an instant cure to the aftermath of a night of irresponsible drinking, tequila shot taking, and chugging of various alcoholic beverages, there is not. So stock up on the pain killers before heading out to the holiday parties.

Winter woe: The common cold and/or flu

Fix: Flu shots and preventative care

Unfortunately one of the most annoying, painful and time-consuming woes of winter is coming down with an illness. The good news is that sickness is avoidable with the proper precautions. Flu shots are just a google search away, and are readily available at drugstores and grocery stores. Same goes for sanitizing gel and lysol wipes, which also come in handy when your co-workers and friends start coming down with a cough or sniffles.
