COMPLETE FASHION WEEK REVIEW: The Italians Scale Back

by Denise Kuan 3 March 2009 4 Comments E-mail Denise Kuan

Religious followers of Fashion Week (or Fashion MONTH, to be accurate), know to expect nothing short of glamour, sex and attitude come Milan Fashion Week. Versace, Dsquared, Dolce&Gabbana… just to name a few of the pioneers we can rely upon for all of the above. But even for the bold Italians, monetary issues outweigh flashy clothing, and Milan’s catwalks, this time around, showcased mostly safe, tried-and-true looks from each design house. Most designers went back to their staples, focused on wardrobe basics, or simply reintroduced and evolved their Spring styles for Fall. The ode-to-the-80′s movement that swept New York and London was only briefly acknowledged in Milan, with Versace showing some bright metallics and Ferre’s creative directors Aquliano and Rimondi sticking two or three shoulder pads into their already bold-shouldered jackets.

Below, some of the trends from Milan:

Most notably, Pollini and Emilio Pucci saw the debuts of new creative directors, Jonathan Saunders and Peter Dundas, respectively. Saunders put his own stamp on the Pollini label, keeping his signature prints to a minimum and focusing on shape to build the Pollini woman. Dundas, on the other hand, seemed to have taken one too many cues from Christophe Decarnin (of Balmain) and put Pucci’s prints on the backburner.

Thank YOU Denise for putting together runway reviews. Now I can somehow categorize what I see.

I’m in love with the coats. Sadly, it’s too warm in LA for them.

Also, I never thought I’d say this but the Versace minidress is to DIE for!
