April Music Picks

Besides featuring the hottest concert festival in the country in Coachella and the last full month of academia for beleaguered students everywhere, April also has some legitimate album releases to boot. Everyone from Rascal Flatts to Depeche Mode are looking for sales this spring, but below are THE POP FIX’s four best the industry has to offer before sweet, sweet summer.

Boy, Oh Boy George

Never a publication considered out of vogue, Vogue magazine is keeping up with the trend of drag reintroduced into mainstream media by Logo’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” by featuring Boy George as a “Beauty Icon.” We at THE POP FIX would beg to differ, but it’s hard to disagree with Vogue. I guess there’s nothing like a boy who looks like a girl…just ask RuPaul.

What Really Happened to Paris and Doug?

If you’ve been up on your celebrity gossip this week, you probably already know that Paris Hilton and her boyfriend ended up in a brawl at a club in Miami after she approached the DJ, to ask him to play a song she could dance to. According to RadarOnline.com, “Paris approached the DJ in the nightclub at approximately 3am and requested a song by Madonna or Black Eyed Peas, something she could dance to. The DJ was spinning techno music. Suddenly a bodyguard near the DJ pushed Paris, she told RadarOnline.com. Doug then told the man not to touch his girlfriend.”

F*** You, Carl’s Jr. I’m Moving to Africa

Is it just me, or are all of these stupid messy-burger commercials absolutely revolting. Who decided that stretching your mouth-hole to wrap your lips around a huge burger that could feed 3 Congolese children is sexy? There’s something I’d like to tell that person, and whoever does advertising for McDonalds and Carl’s Jr…IT ISN’T. Let the rant continue. I will not discount the fact that a good ol’ cheeseburger is practically an American pastime in itself. Not to mention it’s the perfect accessory to a summer barbecue and beer (other than sunscreen and a Jonas Brother in a Speedo…wait, what’s that you say? They’re all 15? Oops. Nevermind).

Meet Martin Louis the King, Jr.

What pop star wants to help you get your mind off the recession by doing totally insane things like change his name to Martin Louis the King, Jr.? Who else? In the latest issue of Complex magazine, Kanye West said he felt his role in the public is to “entertain people” and do the “crazy, bold stuff so [the public] can live through me and get their mind off the recession.” So, as he announced in a recent video, Kanye is changing his name to Martin Louis the King, Jr. — in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Kanye’s fave brand, Louis Vuitton. And he’s demanding that he “addressed as such.”

THE POP FIX Weekend Concert Picks: 03/27-03/29

Even if you ignore a certain midget’s ridiculous three-concert, three-location marathon on Saturday, the upcoming weekend still holds a rich, if particularly wallet-draining, bounty of fine musical entertainment. Be it two legends of the piano or a rapper whose catchphrases are nearly as ubiquitous as his guest spots, there’s something for everyone’s palette…

REVIEW: My Booky Longy

This memoir, like the title denotes, weaves in and out of sexual escapades and drug addiction whimsically. Many of his stories, if looked through a different lens, would seem depraved and abject. But he’s able to distill these anecdotes to their comedic core. At one point, I casually glazed over a moment of pedophilia without realizing the egregious nature of whatoccured . A tutor molested him, touching his private parts. The moment struck a tone of nonchalance as if it was an usual occurrence in Brand’s life, mere commonplace that older people sometimes take advantage of your innocence. A couple hundred pages later he was in an Istanbul brothel, having sex with one woman while his father, who came in and out of Brand’s life, was now going in and out of another prostitute another across the room. Such are the wonderful, wholesome stories that abound in his Booky Wook.

Sorry BoA, But Yes, This Means Epic Failure

With marketing campaigns with mega clothing store, Forever 21, and ads all over Nylon’s website, well-known producers like Bloodshy and Avant (hitmakers for Britney Spears’ Blackout album) and collaborations with American artists like Flo Rida and Sean Garrett, the effort has proved to be, as far as record sales are concerned, a failure. Which is a shame, because BoA’s album is not half bad at all.
