Disillusioned by Food Network

“Everybody’s got some kind of ice cream in the freezer,” says Ina Garten as she explains how to make gourmet sundaes, complete with triple raspberry sauce which she describes as very “easy” to prepare. This matronly Food Network host would probably be shocked if she took a look around my kitchen. A refrigerator with a bag of dry lettuce, cupboards stocked with canned tuna and a box of stale Wheat Thins, drawers stocked with Crystal Light, Oh, and (here comes the shocker) no ice cream. Sorry to prove your theory wrong, Ina.

Garten’s show on the Food Network ,“Barefoot Contessa,” has quickly risen among the ranks of my favorite TV programs. I just discovered it, and I’m in love. Not only am I addicted to watching her make amazing meals with ease and finesse, but I like to imagine I’m eating her asparagus risotto instead of my italian-dressed salad, or turkey sandwich on wheat. Sigh.

Unfortunately for me, my daily culinary attempts cover the basics.  Rice, sandwiches and sometimes, chicken. Oh, and salad counts as cooking, right?

It’s not that I don’t like to cook, I just don’ t want to unless I’m sitting in Ina’s kitchen where everything is clean, fresh, and pre-washed after it came home from the local market…and there’s always ice cream in the freezer. Sounds like a food utopia. I’ve been disillusioned by the Food Network.

The worst part (or the best part, depending on how you look at it) is that the majority of “Barefoot Contessa” episodes center around Ina preparing these delicious home made recipes for someone else. These lucky people are usually her husband, a visitor, or a local friend…basically, all people I’m extremely jealous of. If only I could find out where she lives, meander around the local specialty cheese store and wait for her to come in and befriend me. Or feel pity for me, whatever inspires her to take me to her home and become a beneficiary of a gourmet bowl of melting mac and cheese.

But until that happens, you can find me here wandering around my kitchen, fumbling with a box of whole wheat pasta and watching Food Network programming, dreaming of the day when I can move somewhere random and center my days around making food for others…as long as I get to taste it first.

How good is that?
