Everyone’s new favorite artist, Sam Smith, will be making his award show performance debut during the 2014 “MTV Video Music Awards” this Sunday. Smith will be joining this star studded night that includes appearances by Demi Lovato, Lorde, Jason Derulo, and many others. He will also be sharing the stage with this year’s hottest performers including, Usher, Ariana Grande, 5 Seconds of Summer, Maroon 5, Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. Dropping beats for the house between awards and performances will be the mega-producer and artist DJ Mustard.

Sam Smith has recently held the MTV title of “Artist to Watch.” His unique sound has captured America’s hearts with tracks like “Stay With Me” and “Leave Your Lover.” His collaboration on a Disclosure track, “Latch,” has had the world dancing. Smith had this to say about his upcoming award show performance, “I have watched the VMAs every year since I was a kid. I am so insanely nervous but also so honored to be performing. This truly is a pinch yourself moment for me.”

Aside from performing, Smith is nominated for both the “Artist to Watch” and “Best Male Video” category. He has had major success as a UK male artist, and this is just the beginning of his crossover to the US charts. Tune in this Sunday, August 24th at 9:00 P.M. ET/PT to watch it all go down.

My first thought was, “This is probably going to be so hipster that it hurts.” “True That” has 18 songs that can be streamed via Bandcamp. It is currently categorized as Indie-Folk and consists of full songs that include vocals, yet many tracks are solely melodies. As much as I like to support everyone’s own art and not critique their hard work, I must say I am sadly not a fan of Cera’s musical side. If he happens to be looking to crossover into the music industry, I think that will be a very difficult road. I personally love his comedy and will continue to support him and his films. The musical comedy stylings brought to you by The Lonely Island will soon be appearing on a movie screen near you. Yes that is right, the trio that has delivered viral hits such as, “I’m on a Boat,” “Dick in a Box,” and “Like a Boss.” The comedy group originally gained an audience via their musical comedy sketches on “Saturday Night Live.” After gaining huge success they started to release full albums of their own, where they ended up topping the charts each time. Now Universal is giving them the chance to shine on the big screen.

Group members Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone will have a hand in the writing process and also co-star in the film. Judd Apatow is attached to produce the film, with Schaffer and Taccone co-directing. The movie is currently untitled, but the story-line is set to take place in the music world. The Lonely Island took over late night television and the internet, but can they rap their way to the top of the box office?

This alternative hip-hop duo is excited to premiere their new single “No Sleep.” Their new album “Enlightened Contagion” puts focus on their genre busting sound. They stated, “We want the fans to feel they’re apart of this inclusive group and they have a say in our direction and the type of music we make.” When speaking about their dynamic sound they said, “We don’t let the genre define us, we define our own music and we’re just ourselves.”

It’s new tunes Tuesday and we are gifted with new music videos from Janelle Monáe and Lana Del Rey. Who says you have to release a music video near the same time your single comes out? It’s been almost a year since “Electric Lady” was released, but the public is just now receiving a music video for the track. The video is full of cameos including that of Janella Monáe’s mother, Esperanza Spalding, Estelle, and Kimbra. Check out Monáe’s fun throwback sorority party below.



Lana Del Rey has released the music video for the title track off of her album “Ultraviolence.” Her label must really love her, because her video budgets are almost non existent. The video uses her usual 8mm vintage like effects, which can be matched by downloading an app to your smart phone. The truth is, it actually was entirely filmed with an iPhone. Wearing a wedding gown, she strolls around the venue seeming as if her thoughts are elsewhere. Maybe she wasn’t prepared to “Say Yes to the Dress.”

“Weird Al” isn’t the only one using celebrity cameos in their latest music video. Jenny Lewis, formerly of Rilo Kiley, has called upon Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Brie Larson to become her band. In the music video for “Just One of the Guys,” Lewis and her friends attempt to break down some gender barrier walls. At the start of the video you are instantly reminded of Robert Palmer’s video for “Addicted to Love,” but quickly enough things get macho! The group takes on a wardrobe of track suits, fake mustaches, and wigs. “The Voyager” is Lewis’ new LP and is set to be released on July 29th. Press play below to watch the gender war unfold via keytars and mustache twirls.
