STYLE PROFILE: Gossip Girl

It seems like the next season of Gossip Girl is far from starting (well, actually about three months), so as the season has ended and people brace themselves for whatever new adventures college will bring, it will be a good idea to talk about one of the key ingredients of the show: internet… gotcha! I mean fashion. Even the New York Times stated: Forget Gossip, Girl; the Buzz Is About the Clothes, and they don’t lie (as usual).

Gossip Girl shows us the privileged, the lost, the sober and the whores, but most importantly, portrays young fashion, couture, trends and empowering looks more than any other television show. It is impressive, actually. The male characters are very well rounded in terms of fashion. You have the geek style from Dan (Penn Badgley, coping the trend from Kanye West’s later interpretations, to Justin Timberlake’s earlier ones); then the hunk that can dress as football player or in Ermenegildo Zenga suits called Nate (Chase Crawford). Finally, you have Chuck Bass (played by Ed Westwick) who is just beyond good and evil when it comes to clothes. He might be a player and stuck up (well, his character), but they have shaped an image based on formal wear in different colors, from pink to violet to orange, daring to play with textures in vests and shirts, always bringing to the table fashionable accessories, like the bowtie.

The girls go one step further, with the blessing of Chanel or Dior, they keep in formidable shape to wear those gorgeous gowns, all very retro and inspiring, in vivid colors, especially Serena (Blake Lively) whose style is defined by elegant dresses, high heels and long hair. On the other hand, Blair (Leighton Meester) is not only queen bitch, but the queen of accessorizing, or tell me, who can forget the hair band she wears in the last episode of the season, like a huge sparkling seashell. Taylor Momsen plays Jenny, the young aspiring designer. I hate her style, too emo-inspired for me, bad hair, ugly makeup and untidy clothes. However, the designs she “makes,” especially dresses, are very trendy and innovative.

Gossip Girl has been two years on air, struggling for ratings and from parental bans due to sexual content. Who cares about the sex, the drama or the hot bodies that seem to get naked as many times as possible? All that matters are the clothes, and you’d do good if you tried to look up to them, specially since Target is releasing a collection inspired by them next season.
