THE GUIDE: What To Wear In 2011
Who doesn’t love entering a new year with a new outlook on life? If one of your resolutions in 2011 is to transform into a fashionista, you’re in luck. This will be a great year for fashion novices! Some of the biggest trends that we’ve seen on the runway for Spring 2011 are also some of the easiest to wear. It’s time to bring in the new year with new trends!
White Hot
Put a fresh spin on a classic jacket and invest in a piece that’s white! Any style savant is no stranger to outerwear in dark colors like classic black or navy, but this season, try winter whites. Look into purchasing a clean white blazer, as interpreted byAlexander McQueen or a white, leather motorcycle jacket from the Neiman Marcus Collection.
Keep It Simple
Minimalism is back and for those of you who are cautious to wear trends that you see on the runway, there’s never been a better time to shop! In Spring 2011, keep the focus on shapes and colors rather than embellishments and adornments. Let bright colors take center stage, even if you’re just wearing a shift dress. For inspiration, look to BCBG’s take on the color-blocked dress. This trend also translates to accessories, so look for bags that follow suit like simple crossbody styles from Marc by Marc Jacobs.
Stripes
Stripes are one of the easiest trends to incorporate into your every day style. They’re casual, classic, and these days you can find them everywhere. However, this time around look for styles that differ from the nautical trends from seasons past. Stripes on top of tie dyed tees, like BCBG’s striped panel top, or in unusual directions, as seen on this Diane von Furstenberg sweater, are both new ways to wear this trend.
Sportswear
Sportswear is back in a big way, suddenly trends we usually see on the beach or at the courts hit the runway for Spring 2011 shows. Spandex inspired pieces were seen at Bottega Veneta, and Ohne Titel showed us neoprene bodysuits. The good news about this trend is if you’ve walked into an American Apparel store in the past year, you probably already have a bodysuit in your closet. The bad news is, It may be too chilly to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe just yet. But when the weather permits, try the tennis-inspired DSquared cotton shorts.
