THE CRITIC: Confessions of a Shopaholic
Confession of a Shopaholic: Opens February 13, 2009
Cast: Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Krysten Ritter, Joan Cusack, John Goodman
“Dress: Zac Posen. Belt: Todd Oldham Vintage. Bag: Gucci,” begins my favorite film of ‘09. Rebecca Bloomwood (played by Isla Fisher) enters the scene and immediately commands the attention of the audience with her over-the-top outfit and bubbly personality. Isla Fisher played the part of Rebecca with such comedic ease that I didn’t want the movie to end.
Rebecca Bloomwood loves to uncontrollably shop and will do anything to get a Gucci sweater at 50% off. But, alas, she is swimming in debt (who can’t relate to that) because of her overspending. There is not a single sample sale in New York that Rebecca does not got to. Even when she’s in Shopaholics Anonymous she leaves the meeting early to go to a sample sale. She has always dreamed of writing for a fashion magazine, but she has no way to get her foot in the door until she gets an interview for a savings magazine, which is so not her life. However, she excels at her job and writes a column that relates shoe shopping to investing and gains overnight celebrity status.
Her best friend, played by Krysten Ritter, helps her to get over her debt by banning her from shopping and by forcing her to give all her belongings away. Rebecca is forced to deal with her encroaching debt as a debt collector by the name of Derek Smeath follows her all around New York and she tries everything to avoid him. Hugh Dancy plays her love interest and his charming personality makes his character very likeable as the editor of the savings magazine. Joan Cusack and John Goodman round out the cast as Rebecca’s hilarious parents who are, ironically, very frugal. Round up your girlfriends and go check out this movie. I definitely say SEE IT (I think it’s better than “Sex and the City,” just don’t tell SJP). It doesn’t hit theaters for a few more days, so you’ll have to settle for the trailer until then.
So…was the movie good or bad? And why was it better than SATC??
The previews look cheap, and Isla Fisher is NO Branshaw.
Next time, please write MORE than if it’s good or bad.
How were the clothes and costumes?
