Dolce & Gabbana Men’s Collection Fall 2010 is Nothing New

Finally, Milan brings us the glory of Italian fashion season! I love fashion weeks all over the world (there are so many that you can get to one pretty much three times a month). Having said that, I want to talk about one of my perennial favorites: Dolce & Gabbana.

The fashion show was exactly what was expected: clean cut, good music, great lighting. Everything else (specifically, the excitement about a collection from these geniuses) was simply gone after a few minutes.

There were plenty of distressed shoes and boots, all dirtied-up tp the point of extreme vintage! Then, a myriad of v-necks in t-shirts and sweaters followed. Velvet suits in dark browns and blacks reminded me of a time in fashion when these were sold in horrendous cuts. However, I’m happy to report that Dolce & Gabbana’s are extremely well fitted. I loved their “new” interpretation of the zipper, that now is diagonal instead of vertical. Kudos!

I saw plenty of vests and all of them were similar to last season’s regulars on Target or Kohl’s. I did appreciate their effort of making even skinnier ties, but it is an understatement of a major problem: a lack of intent to take risks. No groundbreaking materials or textures in their sweaters, which seem quite “common” except for the cool low necks (don’t wear them if you have man boobs, though). I loved the jeans with their rips and seams everywhere and in black and grey colors instead of a typical blue.

The collection as a whole is very urban chic, and still masculine. Yet, it reminded me a of Burberry collection (sans trench coats). The show closed with a bunch of men (the models) wearing just tank tops. Nothing interesting, nothing fashion forward. Nothing cool!

Honest to God, I am more excited about Gaultier + Levi’s upcoming collection for Target than this show… bummer…

The NYT seems to like it: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/18/fashion/18iht-rroots.html?ref=fashion

    I still don’t… I mean it’s great as usual, but not groundbreaking…

You are right on target when you describe the collection as nothing ground breaking and lacks in risk taking. I completly agree although I liked the collection and would like to see more men dressed this way. Please, for the love of God will the “pants falling down” look go away once and for all never to return and take the gold teeth and sideways hat with it!!!
    Bravo Dolce and Gabbana
