THE CRITIC: Galliano Fall 2009

We are barely entering summer, but I am pretty sure all fashionistas have bought more than enough clothes for the season, so I decided to review one of my favorite collections for Fall 2009, which are already up for grabs. Having said that, I have to confess two things: j’adore Dior and I love Galliano. Our favorite brit designer has worked in some of Dior’s most prolific, controversial and avant-garde collections up to date, and with his own label, John Galliano, he has crossed every single boundary he has encountered, with a true passion for design and breaking rules.

Big Wangs=Big Fun

Tucked away in a little corner near Sunset and Cahuenga, Big Wangs can best be described as half biker bar, half Pizza Hut. The red and white checkered tablecloths hearken back to the day where you bonded with your little league team over video games and greasy grub.

THE CRITIC: “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” Boosts Phoenix to a New High

Phoenix has been chugging along dutifully for years ever since their taste-making role in Lost in Translation’s soundtrack, but fame has continued to elude the French foursome. Lost in Translation wasn’t Garden State, and Phoenix certainly isn’t the Shins, but despite Phoenix’s ability to churn out irresistibly catchy pop singles, those same singles have never managed to translate into pop success. Maybe something was lost in translation over the Atlantic (sorry, I had to), but Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, their 4th major label effort, offers more than enough quirky synth-rock to finally give the band a hit on American shores.

STYLE PROFILE: Lady Gaga

With outrageous lyrics, and outfits to match, she has made every single head on both the music and the fashion industry turn and bow. And believe me, the whole world is bowing down to her two hit singles, number one in both the US and UK, the biggest markets to conquer. No need to drop designer names. No need for expensive boutiques. All she does is take a garment and make it her own, bless it with a personality and make it the next sensation.

The Future of Fashion?

This morning went by as usual. I got out of the gym and straight into my vintage Burberry yellow-brown-and-white checked shirt. I put on these comfortable gap pants and Kenneth Cole belt, and left ready to take over the world, driving like a maniac and drinking Diet Coke. I went on singing “Poker Face” until I finally parked and proceeded to go to my little laptop, on this brownish desk I hate so much. But I wasn’t feeling like working, so I started reading the New York Times and bumped into a blog that left me aghast…

A POPPIN’ GUIDE: Understanding The Freakum Dress

Recently, while watching an episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, I saw a couple of drag queens lip-synching for their lives to a song encouraging one to “put their freakum dress on.” “Freakum dress?” I said aloud. “What is this freakum dress and why don’t I have one,” I asked myself, followed by, “How is it that contestants on a gay man’s reality show know more about being a girl than I do?”
