THE CRITIC: The Oscar-Nominated Shorts

As films seem to get longer and longer only to test our poor ADD-ridden selves, there finally comes some relief for moviegoers. For those who want to keep up with all the Oscar buzz but wouldn’t be able to stay still past Benjamin Button’s middle-age years, the ten Academy Award-nominated live-action and animation shorts (that’s 40 minutes and under) are now showing in select theatres and are available on iTunes.

Christian Louboutin’s $6,295 Shoe Debuts at South Coast Plaza

In the one city directly associated with sun-baked athlete’s wives and bored, rich kids, it might actually not come as a surprise that a certain shoe designer chose to debut a $6,295 pair of shoes. But this city is also infamous for its prominence of flip-flops and overpriced logo beachwear, and when Christian Louboutin to [...]

Movie Going Public Remains Infatuated With Obese People

Move over Paul Blart, your reign as Hollywood’s predominant oversized hero has come to an end. Tyler Perry’s “Madea Goes To Jail” has officially become the number one film in America courtesy of, you guessed it, the large and in charge antics of pot-smoking, gun-wielding Mabel “Madea” Simmons. The Lionsgate release pulled in 41.1 million last weekend, a record setting numbers for the company. 2009 has proved to be the year of the obese hero. Pleasantly plump children all across America finally have a reason to go to school outside of lunch break. Heroes like Madea and Paul Blart have the power to inspire confidence that even they can solve crimes, break out of jail and yes, even ride on Segways. ‘Bout damn time.

Mischa Barton Tackles Weighty Issues

Forget the war in Iraq, countries suffering with civil strife, and children dying of starvation! Let’s talk about how much Mischa Barton weighs! The former-OC starlet logged on to her blog to tell the world to stop talking about her body (because it’s such a big deal in the media right now? Really?). “I appreciate the concern, I just wish the press wouldn’t harbor on it as I think it’s very unhealthy for young girls to read about and pay attention to. To my female fans: Just be happy and secure with yourself and don’t let other people’s perceptions of you dictate the way you live your life.” -Mischa Barton. It is just us, or hasn’t Mischa Barton always been skinny? Sure, the girl took a few bad pictures with visible cellulite, but hasn’t Google educated us that cellulite can be genetic? Whatever. So here are some pictures of the “newly skinny” Mischa Barton.

Taylor Swift: Teen Vogue Cover Girl

Country crooner Taylor Swift put down her teardrop-soaked guitar for a second to participate in a photoshoot for Teen Vogue. The curly-haired cutie shows off a softer side in these photos, sporting a wavy blow out. Despite being recently linked to Joe Jonas of Jonas Brother-fame, Swift says she single and isn’t exactly looking for inspiration for her next big break up single quite yet…”Well, I’m typically single. I’m the girl who-I call it girl-next-door-itis–the hot guy is friends with and gets all his relationship advice from but never considers dating. Right now I’m not opposed to falling in love, but I’m also not exactly out there looking.” -Taylor Swift

High Five Hollywood: A Post-Oscar Analysis

High five Hollywood, we did it! In a record year for minorities, foreigners and homosexuals, the Oscars churned out gold statues with fervor. Danny Boyle, director of the Indian film “Slumdog Millionaire” sat entranced by the ceremony with a smile that could only be compared to an eight-year-old boy who just found a Ken Griffey Jr. MVP baseball card as his film won award after award, totaling a magical eight.

The spectacle was grand and the performances were lavish. Who can argue with Hugh Jackman dancing and singing with the likes of one and only Zac Efron? Efron, whose slick-backed comb over looked more 2002 coke head stock broker than tween icon, could only be described as highly confusing…”What am I doing here, did HSM:3 get some nominations?”

Top 10 Things I Love About VH1′s Tool Academy

Tool Academy. The most incredible reality show the world has ever seen. This series features nine unsuspecting boyfriends who appear on the show under the guise that they would be competing for the chance to be “Mr. Awesome.” That alone should be enough for acceptance into “Tool Academy,” but these boys prove they really are the worst of the worst, the boyfriend every girl dreads, a perfect archetype of a guy who’d make you cringe if you found out he was dating your best friend.

After these tools found out that they weren’t actually competing to be “Mr. Awesome,” they realized what was up. They were in relationship boot camp, sent on behalf of their girlfriends in a last, desperate hope for reformation. This is the set up for the dramatic episodes we’ve seen on VH1 (Sunday nights, 10 PM). The guys, the girlfriends, and of course, ridiculous toolish antics provide sufficient Sunday night entertainment, recommended to all who can appreciate some back-stabbing, cheating, and of course, the classic polygraph test.
